Clue Tasks

Clue tasks are critical components of the clues that make up your hunts in Backyard Hunt. Each task challenges players in different ways, contributing to the game’s educational and entertainment value. We currently support three modules for creating clue tasks: Math, Selection, and Freeform Text, with plans to expand these options in the future.

Math Module

The Math module allows you to create math-based tasks with configurable parameters:

Number of Problems: Choose how many math problems to display for the clue.

Precision: Set precision for the answers. ‘0’ means whole numbers (integers), while any other value specifies the number of decimal places for float numbers.

Allowed Operators: Choose from plus, minus, multiply, and divide.

Complexity Levels:

Simple vs. Advanced Addition: Without regrouping vs. with regrouping.

Simple vs. Advanced Subtraction: Without regrouping and only positive integers vs. including negatives.

Simple vs. Advanced Multiplication: Single-digit multiplication vs. multiple digits.

Simple vs. Advanced Division: Whole number answers vs. answers with remainders or decimal points.

Integer Only Option: Decide whether to restrict operations to integer results.

Selection Task Module

The Selection task module enables you to set up questions with multiple choice answers:

Question Setup: Pose a single or multiple choice question.

Answer Options: Add possible answers.

Correct Answer Selection: Choose the correct answer or answers from the provided options.

Freeform Text Module

The Freeform Text module offers the most flexibility:

Content Creation: Write any text for the clue.

Interaction: There is no required answer; players simply proceed by clicking “next”.

Task Nature: Often used for fun or light-hearted tasks that don’t require verification, such as “Run in circles for 2 minutes”.

By understanding these modules and their settings, users can effectively tailor the challenges within their hunts to fit educational goals, entertainment value, or a mix of both.
